Spirited Folk
Spirited Folk performs folk songs in the tradition of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, as well as their own originals. Their vocal harmonies are backed up by lively acoustic instruments, including banjo, guitar, mandolin, psaltery, and accordion. The tone ranges from contemplative to foot-stomping. Audiences often can’t help but join in singing.
Spirited Folk consists of Joel Gold, Frannie A. Doonan, and Dave Mussey. They have performed for years in numerous folk and dance bands, and love to share this infectious music with audiences of all ages
Dave Mussey
Dave has been playing in folk music and contra dance bands for 25 years. His strong tenor harmonies are an integral part of the Spirited Folk sound. He provides acoustic backup with guitar, mandolin, and button accordion. You might be lucky to hear one of his original songs.
Frannie A. Doonan
Frannie's lifelong love of singing and music brought her to her first band several years ago. She now enjoys singing with Spirited Folk, where her high voice resonates beautifully in the vocal blend. You may hear her play her new instrument, the bowed psaltery.
Joel Gold
Joel started playing the long-neck banjo as a student in the 60's. His attachment to folk music has remained steady and true ever since. Singing songs in the spirit of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, Joel delights audiences with his songs o f the sea, of protest, and of great historical import.
They have performed several times at the Common Ground Country Fair and the Downeast Country Dance Festival. Other recent performances include the Next Generation Theater in Brewer, the Belfast Art Walk, the Wooden Canoe Festival in Medway, the Dover-Foxcroft homecoming, and the Brewer Public Library. They have also toured several Maine island communities.
